Sodium Bicarbonate aims to counteract muscle acidification and allows you to go deeper and recover faster between efforts.

Especially sports with several short intense efforts or different sequences benefit from this.

Bicarbonate is also interesting for endurance sports where you occasionally need to go deep (e.g. a cycling stage with several climbs). In the case of pure endurance sports where the same intensity is maintained continuously (e.g. a marathon), it has no proven benefit.

Instructions

The dosage of sodium bicarbonate is 0.3 to 0.4 grams per kg body weight. So for someone weighing 70 kg, this equates to 21 to 28 grams.

The capsules should be taken in the hours before an effort, with the last capsules taken about 1.5 h before the start.

To avoid stomach/intestinal complaints, it is best to take the capsules in staggered doses of max 5 to 6 grams of sodium bicarbonate at a time. Leave 15 to 20 minutes between each intake.

Tips & Tricks

When using sodium bicarbonate, gastrointestinal symptoms may occur. To avoid these as much as possible, it is advisable to take the capsules with sufficient water each time (and ideally also eat something on top).

Do not experiment with this on an important day, but test it several times in advance during training sessions!

Detailed description

Sodium bicarbonate is one of the supplements athletes use to improve their sports performance.

Lactic acid is produced during intensive exercise. Consequently, this lactic acid is broken down into lactate and protons. These protons are responsible for acidification (burning sensation in the muscles). To better buffer or neutralise these protons, you will be able to exercise longer and more intensively with less acidification.

Bicarbonate is going to buffer the protons in the blood so that they start to accumulate less. This allows you to go deeper into the effort and you can recover faster when you had to go into the red for a while (e.g. for cyclists climbing a slope or accelerating out of corners.

So sodium bicarbonate is only effective for anaerobic efforts lasting longer than 30 seconds and shorter than 10 minutes.

Bicarbonate is often confused with baking powder or baking soda, although these are certainly not the same thing.
